The term "banger" originated during the time period of World War I and II, when sausages where made with a higher water content and additional ingredients like breadcrumbs to compensate for meat shortages. The resulting sausages would burst when cooked on an iron skillet, causing a "bang".
British Bangers can be cooked in a variety of ways, including grilling, frying, baking, or simmering. They are a base component of the classic British dish, bangers and mash.
